The final day of Animal Antics arrived, and so did the rain. Today we were off to Dudley Zoo. Sadly the weather didn’t improve and remained grey and drizzly all day, but that did not stop us having a good time! Pupils got to spend the day going around the zoo and Dudley Castle. Here there were different animals to those at Twycross, including tigers, bears and lions. We also got to go through Lemur Walk and met the critters up close. Pupils enjoyed the day and came back thoroughly exhausted after a jam packed week of activities.

Thursday arrived and so did the rain! Today we were off to Hatton Country World. Here we fed the goats and sheep and visited the guinea pigs in guinea pig village. So cute! We also went on a tractor safari, observing the wild sheep and donkeys in the area. Once we had returned from our adventure to the great wilderness we returned to cheer on the sheep in the grand national and enjoy ourselves on the slides. Fortunately the weather improved and no-one got too wet. Last day tomorrow and we’re off to the zoo again, but this time it’s Dudley! Pupils on Animal Antics today visited a local falconry centre. Here we saw around 50 birds of prey including examples of vultures, owls, falcons and eagles. We were able to see many different species including American Kestrels and Snow Owls. Thanks fully the storms stayed away and the first flight occurred before lunch. The focus of this flight was the younger birds. Abbi, the presenter was very knowledgeable and showed us a pair of baby black vultures and Gaston the baby Tawny Owl. After lunch the main flying display began. Abbi flew a large selection of birds including Noodles and Puddle the Harris Hawks, Guinness the Egyptian Fish Eagle, Etna the Ashy-faced Owl and Dave the Bateleur Eagle. Pupils enjoyed the day and said 'it was something different'. This morning pupils spent a glorious morning at Foxhill stables. Here they groomed the ponies learning about all the different parts of a grooming kit (from brushes to hoof picks). They also got to make up feeds for the hungry horses; each horse has it's own special mix. Then came the best part, the riding! Pupils were all match up to their own horse, or pony, and given a half hour lesson. During the lesson they learnt to make the horse walk, stop and trot, one girl even cantered - what a pro! Not to be shown up all the staff got on and rode to!
Pupils commented that it was 'fun', 'brilliant' and that the only wished they had longer. After the wonderful time at the stables pupils had a visit from the Animal Man this afternoon. He had brought a great selection of animals for us to see and handle. Pupils got the stroke tarantulas, bearded dragons and barn owls. They also ended up with a new scarf called Collin, he was an enchanting corn snake - even Mr Grocutt popped in to say hello to Collin's little brother! Perhaps the animal that go the biggest 'awww' was Pearl, the Raccoon Dog. She was only a few months old and adorable. None on the pupils had seen, or even heard of a Raccoon Dog so this was a first for everyone! Tomorrow we're off to the Falconry Centre in Hagley - here's hoping for good weather. Today the sun was shining as pupils embarked on an adventure to Twycross Zoo. Here they got to see a variety of animals. The zoo focuses on endangered species so many of the animals the pupils saw are some of the last ones in the world.
The animals ranged from big cats, including snow leopards and amur leopards, through meerkats and priory dogs right down to leaf cutter ants (found in the rest rooms!). Pupils enjoyed the day and are looking forward to horse riding and seeing the animal man tomorrow. |
